Semiotics Triptych

My theme within my three art pieces is Power. The way I wanted to convey this was by making my three pieces revolve around a bird and a snake fighting and its outcome. At first when looking at icon, you don't see much but a silhouette of both animals, showing the bare minimum of the fight as its supposed to interpret neither of the sides winning but the conflict of the fight. The background is red to symbolize the first signs of conflict. Adding yellow within the piece give it a deeper meaning as its supposed to mean it going into the next panel, as yellow it the background for the next panel. I wanted to show the struggle when it comes to the fight as I wanted to make it seem like it was a losing battle for the snake as the bird is the snake’s natural predator. Making the snake look weak with scars is a great way to show vulnerability. Although he looks weak, I wanted to make him also grow in size to recognize the fact that he is growing in power. For the last panel, symbol, I wanted to show at the end how the snake becomes victorious as it wins the fight, wrapping its body around the snake and winning the battle. The bird becomes smaller, signifying the fact its losing. Making the panel’s background blue I wanted to represent the snake and its power it has over the snake.

Using paint and acrylic markers was a bit of a rocky start when starting off it the piece. I wasn't sure if I wanted to use only markers or paint on my work but eventually I began working with both. I figured that if my paint covers my initial sketches I could use the markers to outline it which worked out perfectly. The way the panels are supposed to connect are by sequential order showing a win to lose battle for both ends, the bird gradually loosing over time as the snake is the one who comes out winning in the end.
